Karats & the Fineness of Gold
Karatage and fineness are expressed in a hallmark stamped with a K or in parts per thousand. In the US, the Karat system is used, and most jewelry is produced in 10K, 14K and 18K. In Europe for example, fineness is used, meaning parts per thousand of gold such as 585. Different countries have different standards as to what can be sold as Gold Jewelry. The minimum standard in the U.S is 10K.
Using pure gold for jewelry is much to soft, other metals called alloys, are added to make the piece more durable. The chart above represents the parts in gold, with the remainder being additional metals.
A note about Allergic reactions to Jewelry
Although gold is unlikely to cause an allergic reaction, the alloys used to make gold more durable can. Nickel, often used in white gold jewelry can cause a problem for many people, resulting in a rash or skin dryness around the area of use.
