Jewelry Care Information

Caring for your jewelry is a good step towards preserving it. Proper storage and handling of your jewelry will help maintain the piece so you can enjoy wearing it time and time again.

Pearls and Opals, by nature are delicate gemstones, and can be easily scratched by diamonds and other gemstones. If possible, give each piece of jewelry its own space, preferably in a lined jewelry box or wrap in a soft cotton cloth or jewelry bag.
Opals, in particular, are prone to moisture loss, and some can craze. As a general rule, avoid airtight containers and exposure to sudden temperature changes.

A jewelry cloth can work wonders and is a good way to gently clean your jewelry. Natural skin oils love to adhere to diamonds and gemstones, and build up happens quite easy with everyday wear.

Ultrasonic and steam jewelry cleaners, although effective, can be harmful to a handful of gemstones, especially Pearls and Opals. A rinse with mild soap and warm water, or a jewelry cloth is the best methods for cleaning Pearl and Opal jewelry.

Common household items such as bleach or chlorine found in pools can damage the nacre of Pearls and attack Opals alike. It will slowly deteriorate and discolor the metal alloys in your jewelry, and possibly loosen prongs and/or stones. So before going for a soak in the hot tub, a dip in the pool, or hard day of cleaning around the house, remember to remove your jewelry.

Having your jewelry checked periodically by your local jeweler should be routinely done, usually every six months. Checking for loose stones and repolishing of the metal from everyday wear will help maintain your jewelry looking beautiful!
