Mexico not only has ardent Fire Opals, but also, incredibly colorful and lustrous pearls. The warm waters of the "Mar de Cortez" has been the culturing haven for their native species, the Rainbow Lipped Oyster (Pteria sterna), also known as "Concha Nacar".
The culturing of pearls in Mexico has a long history, but due to political and environmental changes, culturing came to a halt.
Through the efforts of four dedicated purveyors of the gemstone, "Perlas del Mar de Cortez" was founded, and have now been culturing vibrant Pearls for several years.
The promotion of ethical business practices, both towards their employees and the environment, has set "Perlas del Mar de Cortez" as an honorary, Fair Trade Gems Company.
The pearls being cultured have thick nacre, giving them high luster, can measure between 8-14mm, and come in a variety of shapes, round, near round, and baroque. Mabe pearls (top right), with their impressive coloration, and keshi pearls, are also produced.
The "rainbow" colors of these pearls are completely natural, and are a result of the oyster and elements present in the water during culturing. Silver, bronze, gray, violet, pistachio and "tornasol", which is the spanish word for change in color as the light reflects. With every harvest, there will be a slight variation in color.
The annual harvest of these beautiful pearls is very limited, and as a result, they are rare and highly valuable.
Pearl jewelry with Perlas del Mar de Cortez will be available soon.
